In 1st grade, your child moves from a world where letters are pictures to one where letters are a code. That shift takes months, and it is normally uneven: weeks where everything clicks, weeks where nothing seems to move.
This article covers what actually happens during that year, the mistakes that slow children down most often, and five simple ten-minute activities for home.
The stages of learning to read
Reading develops in a fairly stable order, and school curricula follow it explicitly.
1. Phonological awareness. Before reading, a child has to hear that “cat” is made of three sounds: /k/ /a/ /t/. This is oral work (no print involved) and it starts in kindergarten. It is the single best predictor of 1st grade reading success.
2. The alphabetic principle. The child grasps that each sound maps to one or more letters, a grapheme. This is the central insight: letters do not tell a story, they record sounds.
3. Decoding. The child blends: m + a = “ma”. It is slow, effortful, usually out loud. That is normal and exactly right. Decoding needs repeating until it becomes automatic.
4. Automaticity. After meeting the same letter patterns often enough, the child stops blending them and recognises them at a glance. This is what frees up attention.
5. Comprehension. As long as decoding takes effort, there is nothing left over for meaning. Comprehension only really improves once decoding is fluent, which is why a child can read a passage aloud and then be unable to tell you what it was about.
These stages overlap. You work on comprehension orally while decoding is still being built.
Common mistakes
Skipping the oral stage. Many 1st grade difficulties trace back to shaky phonological awareness. If your child cannot say what is left of “boat” when you remove /b/, the problem is not visual. It sits upstream, and that is where to work.
Reading texts that are too hard. A text where your child stumbles on more than one word in ten becomes discouraging. An easy book read with pleasure beats an age-appropriate one endured.
Correcting too fast. An adult who supplies the word after one second does the work for the child. Count to three before stepping in.
Confusing slow with struggling. A child who is slow but decodes accurately is on track; speed comes with repetition. It is the child guessing words from the first letter or the picture who needs attention.
Turning reading into a test. “Read this to me so I can see” creates pressure. “Let’s read together” does not.
5 playful activities for home
1. Sound hunting. On a car trip, pick a sound: “let’s find words with /a/ in them”. No materials, no preparation, and it targets the most predictive skill there is.
2. Alternate reading. You read one sentence, your child reads the next. They get the pleasure of the story without carrying all the effort, and they hear a model of fluent reading.
3. Syllable cards. Write syllables on scraps of paper (ma, pi, ro, lu) and build words, including nonsense ones. Nonsense words are especially useful: they cannot be guessed, only decoded.
4. Repeated reading. The same short passage, three evenings running. By the third evening your child reads it almost fluently, and can hear the difference. It is one of the few activities where progress is immediately audible.
5. Write to read. Having your child write the shopping list or a note to a grandparent forces them to break words into sounds in the opposite direction. Encoding strengthens decoding.
Ten minutes is enough. One activity a day, not all five.

Frequently asked questions
At what age do children learn to read?
Most children decode simple words around age 6, during 1st grade, and read short sentences independently between 6 and 7. Fluent reading usually settles in during 2nd grade. These are averages: six months either way is common and is not, on its own, a sign of a problem.
My child confuses b and d: should I worry?
Not in 1st grade. Mixing up b/d, p/q or m/n is very common at this age: these letters differ only by orientation, and the brain spends years learning to ignore orientation when recognising objects. The confusion usually fades during 2nd grade. If it clearly persists beyond that, raise it with the teacher.
How long should my child read each day?
Ten to fifteen minutes a day beats an hour on Saturday. Sustained attention rarely lasts past fifteen minutes at this age, and regularity matters far more than duration for making decoding automatic.
Should I correct every reading mistake?
No. Give your child three or four seconds to self-correct before stepping in. That pause is where independence is built. If the word does not come, just supply it and keep going rather than breaking the sentence apart.
Phonics or whole-word reading?
Systematic phonics, teaching letter-sound correspondences explicitly and in a planned order, is what the evidence supports and what school curricula are built on. Whole-word recognition comes later, for a small set of very frequent irregular words, not as the starting point.
